Everything clients ask before engaging us
If your question is not answered here, ask it directly — we would rather answer it now than have you guess.
Working with the chambers
Use the enquiry form, call the chambers, or message us on WhatsApp. Enquiries received during working hours are acknowledged the same day, and we will confirm a time slot with the advocate best suited to your matter.
A first consultation is charged at a fixed, modest fee that is communicated before you confirm the appointment. There are no unexpected additions, and the fee is adjusted against the engagement if you proceed.
Yes. We appear across Tamil Nadu and work with trusted local counsel in other states while retaining strategy and drafting responsibility ourselves.
Regularly. We work over video consultation and correspondence, act under a properly executed power of attorney, and structure engagements so your physical presence in India is rarely required.
You receive a written update after every effective hearing or milestone, a single point of contact for day-to-day questions, and direct access to the advocate in charge for decisions.
Fixed fees for defined work such as opinions, drafting and registrations; stage-wise fees for litigation; and monthly retainers for businesses needing continuous counsel. Everything is confirmed in writing before work begins.
Entirely. Communications with the chambers are privileged, file access is limited to the advocates working on your matter, and we decline engagements that would create a conflict with an existing client.
No advocate honestly can. What we will give you is a realistic range of outcomes, the strengths and weaknesses of your position, and a clear recommendation on whether to fight or resolve.
Practice-specific questions

With clean corporate records, a seed or pre-Series A round closes in three to six weeks from term sheet. Diligence gaps — missing minutes, unregistered leases, unpaid statutory dues — are the usual cause of delay, which is why we run a readiness check before the term sheet is signed.
Not in the same transaction. We take one side, disclose any prior relationship, and decline the engagement where a conflict cannot be cleanly managed.
Yes. Many clients retain us on a monthly counsel arrangement covering contract review, notices, compliance calendars and unlimited advisory calls at a fixed fee.
A civil suit at first instance in Tamil Nadu commonly runs three to six years; commercial court matters and arbitrations are faster. Interim protection, however, is often secured within days or weeks — and that is usually what protects your commercial position.
Rarely. Your presence is generally needed only for evidence, certain family matters, and where a judge directs personal appearance. Everything else is handled by counsel.
A drafting and filing fee for the pleadings, then agreed appearance fees per effective hearing. You receive an estimate for each stage in advance, and we do not bill for adjournments we did not cause.
An unopposed application typically registers in twelve to twenty-four months, but you may use the ™ symbol from the filing date. Oppositions extend the timeline considerably, which is why clearance searching matters more than filing speed.
No — copyright exists on creation. Registration is nonetheless valuable, because a registration certificate is far easier to prove in an infringement action than a chain of drafts and emails.
Yes. Most major platforms honour a documented brand-owner complaint quickly, and where the seller is persistent we pursue injunctive relief and damages in court.
Five to seven working days once documents are complete. Where records must be obtained from a sub-registrar or revenue office, we tell you the additional time before starting.
Yes. We work through a properly drafted and attested power of attorney, share verified scans at every stage, and arrange registration through your named attorney holder.
It is strongly advisable for high-value transactions. Registration gives your agreement evidentiary strength and protects you against a second sale during the payment period.
No. Patta is a revenue record evidencing possession and revenue entitlement; ownership flows from the registered title documents. We recommend transferring the patta into your name promptly after every purchase, gift or inheritance so the two records stay aligned.
Yes. Following the 2005 amendment to the Hindu Succession Act and subsequent Supreme Court rulings, daughters are coparceners with rights equal to sons, subject to the facts of each case.
Not on its own. An EC only records registered transactions at that sub-registrar office for the period requested — unregistered agreements, older transactions and entries filed at a different jurisdiction may not appear. We always read the EC against the title chain rather than on its own.
A standard sale deed attracts 7% stamp duty and a 2% registration fee, both computed on the higher of the sale consideration or the guideline value — so budget roughly 9% of the property's value on top of the price. Gifts and settlements to family members, and partitions among co-owners, carry lower concessional rates.
Yes. RERA and consumer forums routinely award interest and compensation for the period of delay where the agreement's promised timeline has been breached, and we pursue whichever forum offers the more realistic recovery.
Typically six to eight months, including the statutory cooling-off period. Courts may waive that period in appropriate cases, and we apply for waiver where the facts support it.
Yes. Family proceedings are conducted with restricted access, and our internal practice limits file access to the advocates on your matter alone.
Yes — interim maintenance is a distinct application and is frequently decided early, well before the main petition concludes.
Yes, and that is the best time to involve counsel. Anticipatory bail and quash proceedings are designed precisely for that stage.
For arrest, custody and urgent bail situations, yes. Existing clients have a direct line for genuine emergencies.
Some offences are compoundable and many disputes with a commercial core can be resolved through settlement recorded before the court. We will tell you honestly which category yours falls into.
Often yes, on part payment or on merits where the demand is clearly unsustainable. A stay application should be filed with the appeal, not after recovery begins.
Always, where one is engaged. Tax disputes are won on the numbers and the law together, and duplicating your accountant's work only adds cost.
Many are. Reassessment has strict procedural requirements on sanction, reasons and time limits, and defects there are a frequent and effective ground of challenge.
Post-employment non-competes are generally unenforceable as restraints of trade, but confidentiality, non-solicitation and garden-leave provisions can be drafted to protect legitimate interests effectively.
Yes — any workplace with ten or more employees must constitute an internal committee, adopt a policy and file annual reports. Non-compliance carries penalties and reputational exposure.
Yes, provided the contract permits it and the process is documented — objective standards, recorded feedback, an opportunity to improve, and dues settled correctly.
A contested civil suit at first instance commonly runs three to six years, though interim relief is often secured within weeks. Well-documented matters and mediation can shorten this considerably.

Compensation is assessed under heads including loss of income, medical expenses, pain and suffering, and loss of dependency, applying the multiplier method the courts have settled for future loss of earnings.
Only on statutory grounds and through the procedure prescribed under the applicable HR&CE legislation — a hereditary right is not lost by administrative order alone.
The HR&CE department has primary administrative jurisdiction, with appeals lying to the Commissioner and, ultimately, to the Madras High Court.
Recovery options range from a demand notice and SARFAESI action for secured lenders, to a suit for recovery or arbitration, depending on the facility documentation and the nature of the security.
It depends on the type of mortgage. An equitable mortgage by deposit of title deeds does not require registration, but most other mortgages and charges do, along with a CERSAI filing.
The default threshold is prescribed by the government from time to time under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, and applies per default, not cumulatively across debts.
Only in limited circumstances, since the Code restricts certain persons connected with the default from submitting a resolution plan — this is assessed on the specific facts.
Project finance is secured primarily against the project's own assets and cash flows, with limited recourse to the sponsor; corporate finance relies on the borrowing company's overall balance sheet.
External commercial borrowings are governed by RBI's ECB framework, and depending on the structure, may need to be reported or approved before drawdown.
With complete documentation, incorporation typically takes seven to fifteen working days, depending on name approval and processing time at the Registrar of Companies.
Directors can face personal liability in specific, statutorily defined circumstances — this is assessed against the particular default and the director's actual role.
It can be, if the parties' conduct shows acceptance of its terms, but a signed and, where necessary, stamped document is always the stronger position in a dispute.
Absent a dispute-resolution clause, a party can approach the ordinary civil courts, but this is exactly the gap a well-drafted contract should close in advance.
At least annually for most businesses, and immediately after any material change in operations, ownership or the applicable regulatory framework.
Note the deadline first, then assemble the relevant records before replying — a rushed, undocumented response is the most common cause of an adverse order.
Combinations that cross the asset or turnover thresholds notified by the government require prior CCI approval, subject to specific exemptions.
Typically a leniency application by a cartel member, a reference from another regulator, or information received by the CCI suggesting coordinated conduct.
It depends on the model — a fintech acting as a loan service provider for a regulated lender needs a different compliance posture than one lending on its own book, which typically requires an NBFC licence.
RBI's KYC master directions apply, including specific conditions for video-based and Aadhaar-based e-KYC onboarding.
Before incorporation, or immediately after — it is the cheapest document a startup will ever need, and the most expensive one to draft after a disagreement has already started.
Most early-stage Indian startups reserve five to fifteen percent of fully diluted equity for the ESOP pool, sized against actual hiring plans rather than a round number.
Absent a written assignment, the default position under Indian copyright law can favour the creator even for commissioned work in some categories — a clear assignment clause avoids the ambiguity entirely.
Yes, through properly drafted exclusivity and non-compete clauses, provided they are reasonable in scope, duration and territory.
No. Selling a physical artwork does not transfer copyright unless expressly assigned in writing — the artist retains reproduction rights by default.
Auction houses generally require clear title and provenance before accepting a consignment, so an unresolved ownership dispute should be settled before attempting a sale.
Yes, through registration under the Designs Act, provided the design is new and has not been previously published, alongside trademark protection for the brand itself.
Most marketplaces act on a documented brand-owner complaint within days; persistent sellers may require an injunction and damages claim in court.

Contain the breach, preserve evidence of what happened, and assess the notification obligations that follow — delay in either step increases both legal and reputational exposure.
It depends on the category and scale of the project under the applicable notification — many industrial and construction projects above a threshold require prior clearance.
Yes, before the National Green Tribunal or the High Court, though the strength of the challenge depends heavily on the project's own compliance record.
Certain large listed companies are required to file Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reports; other businesses face ESG expectations contractually, from investors and lenders, rather than as a direct statutory mandate.
Institutional investors increasingly run ESG due diligence alongside financial diligence, and weak governance or environmental practices can affect valuation or deal terms.
Revenue and forest department records, read together, establish the classification — this should be verified before any purchase or development near forest boundaries.
Only through the statutory diversion process, which involves central government approval and compensatory conditions, and is available in limited circumstances.
Ship arrest is an admiralty remedy allowing a claimant to have a vessel detained as security for a maritime claim — it is typically the first step when the shipowner has no other assets within jurisdiction.
Most charterparties and bills of lading specify arbitration or a particular court, so the governing document — not the port of loading or discharge — usually determines the forum.
Many are resolved through the sport's own internal dispute mechanism or arbitration, including before bodies such as the Court of Arbitration for Sport for international matters, rather than the ordinary courts.
The athlete generally does, unless assigned or licensed under a specific agreement, which is why sponsorship and endorsement contracts need careful drafting on this point.

Ideally from the consultation-paper stage, since by the time a rule is notified, the scope for influencing its terms has largely closed.
This varies by state and facility type, but typically includes clinical establishment registration, biomedical waste authorisation, and drug licensing for an in-house pharmacy, among others.

Yes, once signed by the parties, and it becomes directly enforceable as a decree if recorded before a court under the applicable mediation framework.
No — mediation discussions are confidential and without prejudice, so an unsuccessful mediation does not affect your position if the matter proceeds to litigation afterward.
This depends entirely on the risk-allocation clause in the specific contract — most well-drafted EPC and concession agreements address this explicitly through extension-of-time provisions.
Most large infrastructure and EPC contracts include a mandatory arbitration clause, which ousts the ordinary civil court's jurisdiction over the dispute except for limited supervisory purposes.
